James Roland Smith

Rep. James Roland Smith, 92, entered into rest on Monday June 30, 2025.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter W. Daniels and Maybell Smith Craig; brothers, Cecil “Bubba” Craig, Ronnie Craig, Frankie Craig; sisters, Betty Cain, Linda Craig; and grandson, Dawayne Smith.

He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Peggy Cato Smith, sons, Garry (Brenda) Smith, Todd (Tammy) Smith; daughter, Caroline Smith; grandchildren Amber Smith, Michael (Arika) Smith, Dana (Keith) Haase, Bradie Couch, Margo (Cade) Bishop; and 9 great grandchildren.

Rep. Smith served in the United State’s Air Force for 2 years during the Korean War, where he earned the National Defense Service Medal. He received his Doctorate of Divinity from the Universal Bible Institute. He served as South Carolina House Representative 84th District from 1993 until his retirement in 2013 where he served as the Chairman of the House Ethics Committee and as a member of the Ways and Means Committee. He also served as Chairman of the Board for the Beech Island Rural Community Water District for 10 years, Board of Education Aiken County for 6 years and as Vice Chairman for 4 years. In addition, he was also an active Pentecostal Minister for 38 years, a retired rural carrier, and an accomplished entrepreneur. Beyond these accomplishments Rep. Smith enjoyed being member of the Lions Club and the Beech Island Agricultural Club. He was also an avid bicyclist.

Above everything else was a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

A Funeral Service, celebrating his life will be held at Langley Bible Church, 2551 Augusta Rd, Warrenville, SC 29851, on Saturday July 5, 2025, at 11 A.M. with Pastor Gene Brown to officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The burial will follow immediately with honors at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Ted Odom, Darrell Cain, Dennis Dickey, Gregg Cato, Ricky Smith, Adam Hutto, Randy Golf, Hunter Scott, and David Scott.

In lieu of flowers the family request that donations in Rep. Smith’s memory be made to the Horse Creek Veteran’s Park, 3187 Augusta Road, Warrenville SC 29851

Jackson Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory of Graniteville has been entrusted with these arrangements.
